El escándalo de pedofilia: Divulgan 117 nombres de curas abusadores

BOSTON, MA. Alegando que la iglesia católica de Boston no ha honrado su palabra de entregar la lista de los sacerdotes y empleados acusados de violación sexual contra feligreses, un abogado representante de decenas de las supuestas víctimas dio a conocer 117 nombres de religiosos involucrados en pedofilia y pidió a sus colegas juristas hacer lo propio con los nombres de curas que poseen.

La lista dada a conocer el miércoles 19, incluye los nombres previamente divulgados de 19 sacerdotes y miembros de órdenes religiosas que el abogado Mitchell Garabedian dijo que fueron acusados en los casos en que su oficina estableció responsabilidad con la Iglesia Católica Romana.

Asegura que de esos 19, dieciocho alguna vez trabajaron en la Arquidiócesis de Boston y uno estuvo sirviendo en la vecina Diócesis de Fall River. Catorce de los 19 servidores católicos mencionados en el listado, están muertos.

Garabedian justificó su decisión diciendo que la Arquidiócesis de Boston no ha mantenido la promesa de hacer públicos los nombres de los acusados, y más ha propiciado un clima de secreto que no hace otra cosa que proteger a los pedófilos.

La mayoría de los nombres en la lista de Garabedian se encuentra en el área de Boston. El escándalo de los abusos sexuales por partes de sacerdotes, que ha sacudido a la Iglesia Católica Romana en todo el mundo, surgieron por primera vez en Boston hace casi una década.

“Es muy importante para las víctimas que la verdad sea dicha y la liberación de los nombres de los sacerdotes pedófilos está diciendo la verdad”, declaró Garabedian en una conferencia de prensa, donde estuvo acompañado de algunos sobrevivientes de abuso y los miembros de BishopAccountability.org.

Por su lado, un portavoz de la Arquidiócesis aseguró que se está trabajando para liberar esos nombres, pero es un trabajo complejo debido a las preocupaciones sobre aquellos casos de sacerdotes que nunca han sido condenados por un delito de esa índole.

Un comunicado dice que se ha comprometido a la protección de los niños y garantizar que “la crisis de abuso sexual nunca se repita”.

“Seguimos comprometidos en aumentar nuestra política actual en el ámbito de la divulgación de información adicional acerca de clérigos acusados que sea creíble”, precisa.

“Seguimos evaluando la complejidad de esta iniciativa, especialmente lo relacionado con la divulgación de información relativa a los sacerdotes fallecidos o los acusados de un delito, cuya culpabilidad o inocencia no se ha establecido, y la grave preocupación que  este proceso presenta”, dijo.

El abogado dijo que ha representado más de 750 víctimas frente a los 117 miembros de la lista.

BishopAccountability.org, una entidad dedicada a darle seguimiento al escándalo, algunos de cuyos miembros estuvieron en la rueda de prensa, asegura que tiene pistas de  alrededor de 3,200 nombres de sacerdotes acusados, compilados en varios años de informes, noticias y documentos públicos, dijo la fundadora y co-directora, Terence McKiernan.
